Chalk It Up!

I’ve always been a big believer that there are no rules in design! In fact, when someone tells me that you can’t do something, it then becomes my obsession to prove them wrong!

But despite my rebellious rule breaking designer tendencies, I have created a three ingredient secret recipe over the years that I try to apply to all of my personal and client projects… And if you promise not to tell anyone, I’ll share the recipe with you…

My recipe is a dash of unique personality, a splash of visual storytelling, and a pinch of unexpected quirk!

So what does that mean exactly? Well, I think that when a space is complete, it should paint a distinct picture of who the homeowner is, share a narrative about their lives, and contain at least one whimsical “conversation starter”.

If you’re still scratching your head and wondering how to taste test this recipe in your own home, then I’ll happily share one of my fave applications that wraps all three ingredients in one…

Whether you wrap your walls with it or transform a furniture piece, in my opinion, chalkboard paint is one of the easiest and most affordable ways to instantly create a unique and personalized blank canvas for you to tell a story or even sprinkle in that pinch of quirk.

I recently did a DIY makeover using chalkboard paint on a sad pine dresser that I spotted at a local garage sale…

And with the help of chalkboard paint, I created THIS creative catch-all for my oldest son’s bedroom…
