Add Dimension to Your Wall

Materials Needed

  • Bare wall
  • Drop cloth or old sheet
  • Notch trowel
  • Joint compound
  • An old bucket
  • Sandpaper (approx. 220-grit)
  • Painter’s tape
  • Painter's Touch Multi-Purpose Gloss Brush-On (colour of your choice)

Step 1

Prepare your workspace by cracking a window and turning on a fan to increase ventilation. Cover nearby valuables and surfaces with drop cloths to protect them from any mess you may create. This is going to be fun!

Step 2

Mask off the area of the wall on which you intend to unleash your creativity with painter’s tape. Wipe down the working space to be sure it is clean and free of any unwanted contaminants.

Step 3

Mix together joint compound according to manufacturer’s directions or use already-mixed compound to get started quicker. Separate a substantial amount of the compound by scooping it into an old bucket.

Step 4

Using your Painter’s Touch Multi-Purpose in the colour of your choice, pour the paint into the separated supply of compound. Make sure to pour a little at a time for best results. If you find that you’ve added too much paint and think it’s too dark, add more compound to lighten it up.

Step 5

Now it’s time to apply! Using the smooth side of your notch trowel, smooth your compound mix onto the wall from top to bottom. Give yourself a nice thick layer to work with.

Step 6

With notch side of trowel, pull down–one long even stroke is ideal–creating those fun lines you see in the pictures. Be sure to follow the manufacturer’s recommendations on preparation, application, and drying times.

Step 7

Once it is fully dry and hard to the touch, you can remove the surrounding tape. Last step is to take the time to admire your project and especially show it off to guests!
