Materials Needed

  • Old or second-hand wood desk and chair
  • Drop cloth or old sheet
  • Sandpaper (approx. 220-grit)
  • Lint-free cloth
  • Plastic wrap
  • Painter’s tape
  • Painter's Touch Ultra Cover 2X Primer Spray
  • Painter's Touch Ultra Cover 2X Satin Spray – recommended in Satin Nutmeg, Satin Canyon Black, Satin Claret Wine

Step 1

Begin by setting up a workspace in the backyard or garage by draping a few drop cloths over nearby belongings. It's always best to be creative in the great outdoors, but if you work inside be sure to open windows and doors to clear the air.

Step 2

Remove the seat from your chair as well as knobs and drawers from your desk. With your sandpaper, sand all wood surfaces that are to be painted, and remove residue with a damp cloth.

Step 3

If your pieces are made of inexpensive wood or are already covered with a dark paint, you may want to apply Painter's Touch Ultra Cover 2X Primer Spray to the surface to give yourself a clean slate. Be sure to follow the manufacturer’s recommendations on preparation, application and drying times. Allow to fully dry.

Step 4

For this project, it’s best to move next to updating your knobs, so they can dry while you work on the desk and chair surfaces. If your knobs have old paint or glossy surfaces you may want to start by scuff sanding them. You’ll know you have a workable surface when the gloss no longer shines through. Next, place knobs on plastic wrap and apply Painter's Touch Ultra Cover 2X Satin Spray in Satin Nutmeg to the entire surface and let dry.

Step 5

Once the primer on your desk is fully dry, for this particular design, paint the bottom half of the desk using Painter's Touch Ultra Cover 2X Satin Spray in Satin Canyon Black.

Step 6

Working with one colour at a time, apply painter’s tape to either side of the chair areas to be painted with Painter's Touch Ultra Cover 2X Satin Spray in Satin Claret Wine. (See photo for clarification on colour distribution.) Tuck plastic wrap under tape, exposing only those areas to be painted first.

Step 7

You may also wish to paint your drawers in Painter's Touch Ultra Cover 2X Satin Spray in Satin Claret Wine to match the chair.

Step 8

Repeat taping and painting process for those areas of the desk and chair to be painted with Painter's Touch Ultra Cover 2X Satin Spray in Satin Nutmeg. Reapply until you're happy with the finished look.

Step 9

When everything is fully dry, replace drawers, knobs and seat. Now there’s no excuses holding you back from writing that novel you’ve always talked about!
